Physical Education

Intent

It is our vision that all children at Leigh Primary School will foster a love of physical activity and sport which will allow them to leave us with the skills and mind set to be successful in their chosen sporting interests and have an active lifestyle at Secondary School and beyond. We aim for children to develop their confidence and resilience through physical exercise and strive to apply skills and knowledge they learn in school to their wider life, understanding the benefits to their health. Through competitive sport we want our children to think creatively, challenge themselves as well as work collaboratively. Through competing in teams we aim for our children to develop the values to celebrate and respect the success of others, whilst celebrating their own. Our curriculum is inclusive and enables all children to actively engage and progress in physical education.

Implementation

Physical Education at Leigh Primary is delivered by class teachers and our Sports Coach for two sessions a week. Our Sports Coach - Mr Thacker - teaches a range of games according to our progression document which outlines the development in skills and knowledge across all sports derived from our scheme of work from the 'Greenacre Sports Partnership'. We offer a wide range of sports  throughout the year, including football, cricket, hockey, athletics, swimming, tennis and rugby in order that children can apply skills and have opportunities to develop life-long interests.

In addition to this, we are passionate about our children engaging in competitive sports in and out of school in our inter and intra school competitions. Through this we encourage the development of sports knowledge and skills, but also focus on personal development which comes from proudly representing their house and their school.

Further to our instruction of games we also teach dance and gymnastics through the Cascade scheme of work and Real Gym. Tennis is provided by our Tennis Coach at the tennis club for one term per class, per year. All of our teaching is planned to build upon the children's prior learning, providing the progression of skills and knowledge and understanding to ensure that children are progressively challenged throughout their school life. Year 5 and 6 also take part in swimming for a term each to develop water confidence and ensure their safety.  

Assessment is used in all lessons to help support children to reach goals and BEAM (Balance, Education and Movement) is taught and used in Reception as a screening and development tool to help identify children who need support early in their education to reach physical education targets.  

Within the EYFS, we encourage all areas of physical development as an integral part of their daily school life. Following the EYFS curriculum, we encourage children to use a range of movements with ease, respond quickly to changes of speed and direction, move with increasing control and grace, use a range of tools to develop fine and gross motor skills.  We also teach about the importance of regular physical activity , healthy eating and have a good sleep routine.  

At Leigh physical education is woven into our curriculum in many ways including enrichment opportunities. For example:

  • We utilise ICT to support teaching when appropriate including recording and photographing for self and peer assessment;
  • Within science and PSHE the children learn about the health benefits of exercise and healthy eating in order for them to be able to make informed choices within their lives;
  • During English the children utilise the wide range of vocabulary they learn in physical education;
  • We promote active learning within our village whether it be in forest school, utilising the school field, nature walks, scavenger hunts related to various subject areas and orienteering in geography;
  • We conduct residentials in Year 5 and 6 which include a wide range of teambuilding, physically challenging and resilience promoting activities;
  • In Year 5 and 6 we ensure that children have the opportunity to to engage in 'Bikeability' whereby they can learn to safely ride a bike on the road in preparation for travelling to and from school independently in Year 6 and when they enter secondary education. We start in Year 5, so that if a child is not road ready by Year 6 they can enter the course again;
  • We encourage active play with playleaders in Spring and Summer Terms when the children use the Green at lunchtimes;
  • Our Sport's coach has produced active blast videos to be used in classrooms to provide active breaks in learning to promote concentration. Videos also used include yoga and dance;
  • Most of our teaching assistants are trained in Sensory Circuits  - The sensory circuit aims to facilitate sensory processing to help children regulate and organise their senses in order to achieve the 'just right' or optimum level of alertness required for effective learning. The circuits are active, physical and fun and the children enjoy completing them;
  • Encouraging children to walk to school;
  • Inspiring children to pursue their interests and talents in sport through inviting Sportsmen and women into school. In particular, we raise the awareness of inequality in sport historically and highlight these issues to the children through Votesforschool programme as they explore questions such as: 'Will the lionesses win inspire more girls to play football?';
  • We provide a range of Sport's clubs to the children including: KS1 dance, KS2 dance, Hockey, Football, Football squad, Tag Rugby, Netball and athletics;
  • Children have the opportunity to take part in Love2Dance showcase at the Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks on a yearly basis as well in Year 6 engage in a class production which involves many dances choreographed and performed in a theatre to a large audience;
  • Every year we celebrate the achievement of our students in sport as well as provide opportunity for competition at our Sport's Day which all families are invited to.

Impact

Our teaching of PE provides opportunities for children to develop respect and teamwork and through this a better understanding of themselves and others. Dance, gymnastics and games provides a wealth of opportunities that recognises different interests, talents as well as ability. Within these lessons, our assessment enables us to tailor and support learning to the needs of the individual using a range of equipment, instruction, modelling, providing support and challenge.  In this way, our assessment enables children to reflect on their own learning as they progress to reach or excel school expectations.

We believe that the additional opportunities we offer children to be active is inclusive and enables all children to find a way of being active that they enjoy and that will contribute to them developing a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise - whether it be riding their bike, swimming, a sport, dancing, orienteering, walking outdoors, yoga or more adventurous pursuits!

We monitor and review our Physical Education Curriculum through Governor Visits to challenge our leadership team, parent surveys, school monitoring, staff and most importantly pupil voice. Further to this, we review the impact of our provision in statutory documents that relate to the Sports Premium Grant which can be found below.

EYFS

Physical Development in early years is broadly in two categories -gross and fine motor - but is developed through all strands of the Early Years Framework and the continuous provision.

Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. Gross and fine motor experiences develop incrementally throughout early childhood, starting with sensory explorations and the development of a child’s strength, co-ordination and positional awareness through tummy time, crawling and play movement with both objects and adults. By creating games and providing opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors, adults can support children to develop their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility.

Gross motor skills provide the foundation for developing healthy bodies and social and emotional well-being.

Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye co-ordination, which is later linked to early literacy. Repeated and varied opportunities to explore and play with small world activities, puzzles, arts and crafts and the practice of using small tools, with feedback and support from adults, allow children to develop proficiency, control and confidence.

By the end of Reception we aim for children to achieve the Early Learning Goals below:

Physical Development ELG: Gross Motor Skills

Children at the expected level of development will:

  • Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others;
  • Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing;
  • Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.

At Leigh Primary School, we develop gross motor skills through our Games, Dance and Gymnastics curriculums. This is detailed in the progression documents for the school school and are well-sequenced to prepare children for transition to the Year 1 curriculum. In addition, we utilise BEAM. In Reception Year, BEAM can be used for the whole class in place of PE for six weeks. This programme helps us to identify children who will benefit from improving their movement skills in specific areas.  In addition, to this curriculum children develop their gross motor skills: using bikes in their outside area; creating their own sporting games such as throwing, aiming and catching; setting up and enjoying obstacle courses; as well as visiting our field where they explore the forest area and our trim trail. 

Physical Development ELG: Fine Motor Skills

Children at the expected level of development will: -

  • Hold a pencil effectively in preparation for fluent writing – using the tripod grip in almost all cases;
  • Use a range of small tools, including scissors, paint brushes and cutlery;
  • Begin to show accuracy and care when drawing.

At Leigh Primary we develop the children's fine motor skills are developed through our continuous provision through our handwriting scheme, phonics scheme, creative writing plans which are based on high quality literature, expressive arts where children use a range of materials and equipment to express their ideas as well as using a range of equipment in small world, construction, role play as well as our outside areas.

Cultural Capital at Leigh is something we are passionate about throughout all subjects. We aim to provide as many children as possible the opportunity to compete for the school in a range of competitions/games/tournaments in and outside of the school. This helps to develop their social, leadership and team-work skills, as well as boosting their self-confidence. We teach them explicit knowledge about sport so they can enjoy it as a competitor as well as a spectator and appreciate the talents and skills of those who compete on a National and Global Stage. Alongside this we try to inspire our students to access a range of physical pursuits so that they are knowledgeable and able to make lifestyle choices and develop interests that will impact their physical health as they mature.
